The Chester Bluenose fleet is the largest one-design keelboat fleet in Atlantic Canada and has an active racing schedule from June through September. In July and August there are races on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Some fleet members also join the PHRF races on Saturday afternoons too.

In addition to these regularly scheduled races there is a distance race (the "Extreme Race"), the Bluenose Maritime Championships and Chester Race Week. In June and September the fleet has races on Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Courses are typically within Chester Harbour and the races can be seen from the Chester Yacht Club and the Golf Course. The courses use marks at Reddens, the Peninsula, Quaker and Meisners Islands and the Golf Course (numbered 1, 17, 18, 19 and 20 respectively on the course card) as well as inflatable marks as necessary.

Races are conducted under the auspices of the Chester Yacht Club, and to participate (Maritime Bluenose Championships and Chester Race Week being the exceptions) the skipper must be a member of Chester Yacht Club, Skipper and Crew fleet dues must be paid, the boat must be registered to race, and evidence of the appropriate insurance must be on file at CYC. Boats are required to check in at the start of each days racing by sailing past the committee boat on starboard tack and informing the race committee of the number of people on board.
